The Basics

First, you need to understand that the Bible alone is the Word of God. No other book can provide you with absolute truth.

Next, you need to understand that you are a sinner. In fact, nobody on the entire earth except for Jesus Christ has ever lived a sinless life (2 Corinthians 5:21). Romans 3:10-12 tells us, “There is no one righteous, not even one; All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”

The good news is, God did not create you to punish you, but rather so that He could have an intimate, personal, close-knit relationship with you. God knew that a way must have been made so that people could overcome their sin and come into a personal relationship with Him. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

In dying, Jesus took the punishment that you deserve. Romans 3:25 says, “God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of His blood — to be received by faith.” By suffering a horrible death on a cross, Jesus provided a way for you to be right before God, something that no amount of good deeds or effort could produce otherwise. By being brought back to life, Jesus demonstrated that He had conquered death. We no longer have to fear eternal torment, but instead we can enjoy eternal life with God.

How do I receive eternal life?

The Bible tells us that, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” This is often done through prayer, confessing to God that you realize that you are a sinner and can in no way make yourself right before Him. Ask God to forgive you, not because of anything you’ve done, but rather because of the sacrifice Jesus was. Finally, pray to be filled by God’s Holy Spirit, that you may learn to walk in His ways and not in the way of evil.

What happens next?

Read your Bible daily. If you do not have a Bible, go out and buy one. If you do not have the money to buy a Bible, contact us and we will buy one for you. We also have a link to a good online Bible on our website. Remember, the Bible is our most important tool in learning to live our lives for God. Be sure to live out what you read in the Bible (James 1:22).

Pray often, and know that because of your commitment to God through Jesus, God hears your prayers (Hebrews 4:15-16.) Do not doubt what you are saying when you pray (James 1:6), understanding that through God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).

Finally, get involved in a church (Hebrews 10:25.) There is no better way to grow in your understanding of God and His Word than to get involved with other Christians. We invite you to check out our services here at HBIC!
